HISTORY.
Albright Cottage Pottery
began in 1977 when clay artist Susan Voss walked into an antique store
and discovered a cutwork doily with hearts and flowers that she
immediately knew could be used to make beautiful pottery pieces.
Soon she was scouring antique shops and shows for more cutwork
doilies, runners, tablecloths and tea towels. She began designing new items – wall bags,
wall pockets, pots and vases, boxes, pins, Christmas ornaments and
bathroom accessories – all made with the impressions of these
antique linens and accentuated with elaborate cutouts in the clay.
In the late 70’s most pottery was dark stoneware, and Susan’s
first few pieces were the same. But
she thought the delicate lace and cutwork needed to be rendered in pastel colors
on a delicate white clay. After much experimentation, Susan began doing
her work in porcelain with delicate pastel colors of pink, blue, yellow
and green. They were an
immediate hit at art shows where customers were drawn to colors they
weren’t seeing in work by other potters.
Many years later, pastel-colored pottery is no longer a rarity,
but Susan’s pieces are still unique and highly sought-after by
collectors seeking these delicate and often intricately cut out pieces.
These pieces are especially suitable for shabby chic, Victorian, cottage
and country decor.
